This fun and quirky point-and-click adventure doesn’t really do anything new, but it does provide plenty of adventure and cartoon-esque enjoyment. The story of “The Book of Unwritten Tales” follows several key characters, including an intrepid, elderly archaeologist who possesses some (apparently) lost or unknown knowledge. Armed with this knowledge our sage archaeologist and an ever growing cast of characters must find a sacred artifact so that an ongoing war can be stopped, once and for all. The story isn’t anything new, but nor is it boring, and it certainly doesn’t lack color or flash. The manner in which the characters present themselves and the way the game presents itself is simply outstanding, it really plays out like an interactive animated feature that makes you think a bit.
If you’ve played point-and-click adventure games before, you should be able to quickly familiarize yourself with this, mostly forgotten, style of gameplay. The fun of playing a game like “the book of unwritten tales” is not in fragging or chopping untold waves of creatures or mercenaries to death, it’s in admiring the visuals in storybook-like fashion. “The Book of Unwritten Tales” focuses on puzzles and exploration; like some of the older games in the genre, you never know what you should pick up or how it might be used.
However, the main draw of this title is the visuals; which are mostly 3D models over beautiful, colorful 3D backgrounds. Additionally, the puzzles in this title are not frustratingly difficult either; in other words, they make logical sense.
“The Book of Unwritten Tales” is a solid production with great visuals, voice acting, story, and an excellent sense of humor. Obviously, the point-and-click genre isn’t going to appeal to most PC gamers, but for those that are long time fans of the genre or are interested in new gaming experiences, this is a title worth checking out.
