Glider Simulator puts you in the seat of your own glider and gives you the opportunity to experience the thrill and ecitement of engineless flight. Considered by some to be an inexpensive way to get airborne and by others as cutting-edge knuckle ride sport, everyone agrees that it is a silent and graceful way of flying without an engine.
To succesfully stay in the air, gliders use mainly two soaring techniques: thermalling and ridge lift. Thermals are air that has been warmed by the sun and is warmer than the surrounding air which helps the glider gently rise. Ridge lift occurs when wind blows against the face of a hill surging upwards taking the glider and pilot with it.
An important part of the development of Glider Simulator has been the realistic representation of thermalling and ridge lift. This is because the program was originally designed to help train sailplane lovers.
- Flying – Responsive and co-ordinated use of the rudder and wings slips in flight for use when approaching the runway.
- Views – Carefully selected textures allow you to enjoy the environment of your chosen scenery.
- Varied play – Fly with a club carefully observing their rules or compete against your collegues in a championship contest.
- Educational – The simulation has been formulated using the laws of physics and flight. A careful study of the glider performance capabilities, its polar and how to obtain the best use of it will improve and enhance your gliding experience.
- Aerodynamics – Stalls, slaps and control feedback, force joystick and sound are carefully modelled. Force feedback joysticks are fully integrated into the simulation. You can also use your webcam to pan your view.
- Weather model – The model uses two cloud layers: cumulus and stratus. Clouds form and dissipate with time and dependant on weather conditions. The weather model represents atmospheric movement of lows and highs.
- Terrain engine – LOD technology is used for better results. In particular ROAMĀ“s “Real-time Optimally Adapting Meshes” approximation gathers the information to give accuracy and speed.
- On-line play – This option is very smooth with no limit to the number of participants. Set up your sessions in advance or just in time. This allows other to join you and play your task.
- Record – NMEA output and IGC formats are available. You can also replay your task in 3D mode at a lower scale for a clearer analysis.
- Webcam – Your webcam can be used for panning in internal view.
