SEGA have always provided a finely polished tennis game experience with their Virtua Tennis series. Virtua Tennis first appeared on the Dreamcast arcade-port of 2000 and has changed little since, keeping its core arcade roots. Virtua Tennis 2009 is SEGAs next entry into the series.

Like with many tennis games, Virtua Tennis 2009 is a pick-up-and-play arcade tennis game that is accessible to anyone. A few tweaks have been made to the gameplay, but generally it’s the same as before. The main part of the game is centered on the World Tour mode, which series fans will be familiar with. In this mode the first thing you are invited to do is to create a player, with new editing tools you are able to change the face, hair, body and posture features. You can then join tournaments, practice or play mini games. You get to play in various locations including Dubai and Shanghai with a vast amount of new players. The multiplayer mode is where the real fun is at where you can play singles and doubles.
Mini games will improve your skills and there is a selection to choose from, each game improves a different aspect of your skills. Mini games consist of: Pot Shot – a tennis styled pool game, Pirate Wars – aim for the pirate ships and doge the cannon balls, Count Mania – hit the right numbers with quick reactions, Shopping Dash – collect the cash and doge the tennis balls, Zoo Feeder – Feed the zoo animals by hitting the right food to the right animals and Block Buster – Tetris styled tennis, the coloured blocks.

You won’t be disappointed with the bright, sharp and colourful graphics which are excellent. The player models and animations look awesome, although player expressions can look strange. 3D crowds are another addition visually.
SEGA haven’t disappointed with Virtua Tennis 2009 and you are guaranteed an exciting tennis experience which is taken a small step closer to arcade tennis perfection.
